US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed to update the COVID-19 vaccine once every year, like the influenza vaccine. However, scientists are divided on the proposal. Some argue that the plan will help simplify the country’s complex immunization plan and boost vaccination. Others are skeptical about whether the vaccine should be made compulsory, even for healthy adults. Experts believe that since the SARS-CoV-2 mutates very fast, producing news variants, annual vaccination might not be the solution. The seasonality of flu is well-documented, and vaccination has been optimized. Contrarily, the occurrence of COVID is not well-known yet, and scientists are unsure whether people need to be vaccinated every year or less frequently to be protected from its severe effects.
