The world’s largest operational experimental nuclear fusion reactor, the JT-60SA, was inaugurated in Japan. A collaborative effort between the European Union and Japan, the tokamak vessel aims to investigate the feasibility of fusion as a safe, large-scale, and carbon-free energy source. Unlike fission, fusion involves merging two atomic nuclei, and releasing energy. The device, reaching temperatures of 200 million degrees Celsius, is a precursor to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in France. Fusion, with the potential for net energy gain, is considered a key component in the future energy mix, offering clean power without the risks associated with nuclear accidents.
