Detection of rheumatoid arthritis using thermal cameras

newscapsule_006A new study published in Scientific Reports highlights the potential for thermal imaging to become an effective tool for assessing rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers at Staffordshire University found that the temperature of the palm and finger in patients with rheumatoid arthritis could increase significantly, suggesting that thermal imaging could be used in the future to diagnose the disease. Using a Flir T630 thermal camera, the researchers examined patients with or without active synovitis and successively found that individuals with higher palm and finger temperatures were more likely to have rheumatoid arthritis. The finding could lead to early detection of synovitis which can make a significant difference in terms of disease control.
