Scope Clarity: Journal of Geosciences Insights (JGI)

Geoscience

Introduction

The Journal of Geosciences Insights (JGI) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access resource dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge in both applied and theoretical areas of Earth and geology sciences. We invite original, high-quality research that contributes to the scientific understanding of a wide range of topics spanning as little as the molecular structure of minerals and  as broad as plate tectonics, climate change, and Earth system science. JGI is a scholarly incubator of novel science engaging in dialogue between basic science, applied science, and broadening the scope of earth sciences to include the societal implications of discovery. We hope to provide authors with coherent scope and coverage to inform contributions, while providing readers with modern and comprehensive perspectives on the changing nature of geosciences. Our aim is to amplify rigorous and influential research that advances knowledge and builds both the science-advancing inquiry and to also advance the application of science to the most pressing challenges on our planet increasingly impacting societal application of scientific knowledge.

Core Areas of Focus

JGI encompasses a broad range of geosciences research. Our work is not limited to, but includes the following areas of primary focus:

  • Geobiology– understanding the interactions between life and Earth’s geology.
  • Geomorphology – studying process, landscape change, and surface processes.
  • Biogeochemistry – understanding cycles of chemicals and biogeochemistry in Earth systems.
  • Structural Geology & Tectonics – studying Earth’s crustal architecture and implications for geodynamics.
  • Sedimentology & Stratigraphy – consider the short and long histories of sedimentary processes and the resulting rock record.

Expanding Horizons in Geosciences

In addition to its central focus, the Journal of Geosciences Insights (JGI) also actively supports interdisciplinary and emergent areas of research that broaden the scope of Earth sciences. Contributions in Climate Change Geoscience examining past, present, and future climate systems from a geological perspective are encouraged. Studies in Environmental Geology examine issues related to pollution, natural hazards, and sustainable land uses. Marine Geosciences includes research into coastal processes, ocean processes, and seafloor systems. In Planetary Geology, the journal recognizes comparative research into Earth and other planetary bodies. JGI supports Applied Geosciences and seeks to solicit research that incorporates geological knowledge into practical applications such as energy, mineral exploration, groundwater management, and engineering applications. The journal fosters a diversity of innovative and progressive research themes that will not only expand the frontiers of scientific knowledge but also contribute to the solution of global problems, sustainable resource use, and the future sustainability of Earth and its systems.

Contribution Expectations

The Journal of Geosciences Insights (JGI) anticipates submissions to exhibit clear and significant scientific contributions to society. Manuscripts should outline clear research questions, with each question being well-supported by appropriate theoretical justification and methodological rigor. We stress the importance of transparent data analysis and reproducible research findings to maximize a work’s credibility and influence as part of the ongoing cycle of research. Submission are encouraged to report new findings that advance our knowledge and understanding and contribute meaningfully to the broader, global geoscience conversation. Empirical research and theoretical models will both be welcome and submitted in, if the research is new and offers theoretical insight, as authors advance the field in connecting Earth and planetary systems. Manuscripts will be prioritized that offer new approaches, interdisciplinary perspectives, and applications that advance understanding of current issues contemporary to society. By adhering to these values, JGI provides a journal with a publication process that ensures published contributions will not only meet the scientific standards of quality, but also offer enriching contributions to the broader understanding of geological processes, environmental change, and/or planet Earth dynamic, ultimately providing an impactful contribution to the field, our universities, and society as a whole.

Types of Articles Accepted

JGI publishes diverse formats to encourage wide participation across the scientific community:
• Original Research Articles (4,000-6,000 words)
• Review Papers (3,000-6,000 words)
• Short Communications (1,500-2,500 words)
• Case Reports (2,000-3,000 words)
• Editorials and Perspectives (1,000-2,000 words)
• Letters to the Editor (up to 1,000 words)

Submission & Peer Review

The Journal of Geosciences Insights has an open and rigorous peer-review process. Authors are advised to read the Author Guidelines, Aims & Scope, and Editorial Board before submission. All manuscripts are subject to double-blind peer review. The journal is committed to fast publication and strict publication ethics, promoting original, transparent, and fair practices in publication.

Conclusion

The Journal of Geosciences Insights aims to precisely define its scope, providing authors with a concise understanding of how their research weighs against the journal’s aims while ensuring readers receive unambiguous, yet reliable, knowledge across a full range of geoscience disciplines. The mission of JGI is to advance the scientific dialog, to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and to extend boundaries of knowledge in geology. We seek to contribute to a unified global geoscience community by providing a forum for impactful research that unites theory and practice, innovation, and responds to major challenges facing our planet; while simultaneously contributing to the health and resilience of Earth sciences around the globe.
