AI Surpasses Humans in ICU in Treating Critically Ill Patients with Sepsis

Artificial intelligence (AI) developed at Vienna University of Technology has surpassed humans in suggesting treatment steps for blood poisoning, known as sepsis. By utilizing extensive data from intensive care units, the AI system provides treatment suggestions for patients requiring intensive care due to sepsis. The analyses have revealed that the AI’s decisions already exceed the quality of human decisions. However, discussions regarding the legal aspects of implementing such methods are necessary. While the AI can serve as an additional tool for medical staff, legal frameworks and rules need to be established to determine liability and address scenarios where human judgment differs from AI recommendations.
