Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus —dubbed as 2019-nCoV— scientists have been racing to develop the first vaccine to stem this epidemic. Several groups have started working on a vaccine shortly after the virus’s genetic sequence was shared in an online public database. Among the many, Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Moderna Inc. both claim to have a vaccine ready for testing in animals in one month. Both are using a newer vaccine technology based on specific DNA or messenger RNA (mRNA) sequences of the virus to which the body might strongly react to kindle a protective immune response. However, the vaccine will have to undergo multiple clinical trials before it hits the market that is predicted by this summer or end-of-the-year.
A research team at the Icahn School of Medicine has developed a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform to detect different neurodegenerative disorders using brain tissue samples. The platform employs machine learning techniques to compute microscopic slides that are prepared using tissue samples. This helps generate a convolutional neural network that could accurately detect neurofibrillary tangles, […]

Astronomers have discovered a white dwarf star just 104 light-years away that is undergoing a fascinating transformation into a “cosmic diamond.” The white dwarf, composed of carbon and metallic oxygen, is gradually crystallizing and becoming denser at its core. This discovery, detailed in a paper accepted into the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, […]
