UK government appoints first female chief scientific adviser

Prof Dame Angela McLean, an expert on the spread of infectious diseases, will replace Sir Patrick Vallance as the UK government’s chief scientific adviser, becoming the first woman to hold the role. Dame Angela, who is currently the Ministry of Defence’s chief scientific adviser, played a key role in advising the government during the pandemic as Sir Patrick’s deputy. She will take up the post on 1 April, and has expressed her commitment to using science, innovation and technology to improve public services, create jobs, and grow the economy. The appointment has been widely welcomed and is hoped to inspire more women to pursue careers in STEM.
