New viral vectors to deliver genes to neurons efficientlyResearchers at the California Institute of Technology have successfully developed new viral vectors to efficiently deliver genes to neurons along the body and across the blood-brain barrier. The researchers used an engineered viral vector, AAV-PHP.S, to label neurons covering the digestive tract with a combination of three different fluorescent proteins. The viruses reach their targets through the bloodstream and can be used to treat neural disorders.
