The International Energy Agency (IEA) has emphasized the urgent need to reduce methane emissions from fossil fuels to mitigate climate warming. Methane, though less prevalent than carbon dioxide, contributes significantly to global temperature rise. Rapidly addressing methane emissions can swiftly curb global warming and enhance air quality. The energy sector is a major methane emitter, and the IEA asserts that immediate reductions are crucial to limit warming to 1.5°C. Existing technologies can cut 75% of methane emissions from oil and gas operations and half of coal-related emissions, at minimal cost. Such actions are vital to avert irreversible climate tipping points and have broader benefits, including saving lives and crops. Unfortunately, recent data indicates a slight rise in methane emissions from the energy sector.
